See What Celebs Looked Like on ‘TRL’ vs. Today

Remember MTV’s hit show Total Request Live (TRL)? Like all things nostalgic, it’s coming back!

The star-studded show that used to send pre-teens running home from school to power vote for ‘NSYNC is returning to the network June 2017, Adweek reports. MTV network chief Chris McCarthy says the new show will be called MTV Live and will recapture the frenetic energy of the original. The return of the show is in line with a bunch of other MTV classics from the early 2000s that are returning, from My Super Sweet Sixteen to Fear Factor.

MUST SEE: Shocking Celebrity Scandals You Never Heard About Because They Happened Before Social Media

From 1998 to 2008, TRL ruled the airwaves and took over New York City’s Time Square every day with celebrity appearances, pop star drop-ins, and non-stop squealing from teen fans. It was a monumental event that capitalized on “power dialing” for your faves way before American Idol did.

The “voting” aspect of the show also created some pretty epic rivalries, from Britney Spears vs. Christina Aguilera to Backstreet Boys vs. ‘NSYNC. And who could forget the random celebrity drop-ins who caused traffic jams whenever they waved out the window at the screaming fans below.

As for why the show was such a cultural phenomenon, former host Carson Daly said back in 2008 that he had “no idea.”

“It was a perfect storm of pop culture events happening,” he told TV Guide. “You had so many things popping at the same time, which never happens. Look at right now in music, there’s now media spread out everywhere. People are spending their time in different ways, but back in ’98, for young people, this was their after-school special. This was something they’d come home to that they count on and interact with, which was new at the time.”
