They may have gotten a perfect score from the judges, but it wasn’t all smooth sailing for partners Val Chmerkovskiy and Zendaya on Dancing With the Stars last night.
During rehearsal, only one hour before the show, Zendaya accidentally hit Val in the eye, leaving him in pools of blood just before show time.
“I was worried when it happened. I could see the blood— he was covered in it; it was gushing out,” the dancing hopeful said of her pro partner to In Touch. “Every time I looked over there was more. It stressed me out, but he kept smiling. It means keep going. I’ve learned from this.”
But nothing was stopping Val from doing what he went there to do— win.
“There was no Plan B. It’s a very deep cut and they were worried about my sight,” Val says. “She split my eye lid! Producers asked who can learn my choreography and I was like, ‘Are you crazy? Nobody. I’m dancing no matter what. I’ll dance bleeding.' There was no way I wasn’t dancing tonight.”
And dance, they did. The pair brought in three 10’s for their Cha Cha relay, and Val was taken to the hospital immediately after the show to have his brow checked out.
“Earlier, I was definitely worried, but once the performance started I felt that everything fell into place,” the Disney star said. “I was happy. I was in the whole zone of what was going on.”
So was it difficult for Val to perform with his injury?
“I don’t think about how hard it is…you gotta keep it moving," he says. "It’s not my show or a show about my injuries, it’s about her, her dancing. I patched it up and tried to not spend too much time talking about it – I know there’s a big bandage of my face.”
And though tonight marks the show season’s end, Val will have something to remember Zendaya long after they’re off the dance floor— a scar!
“It’s a deep cut and needs some stitches,” Val tells In Touch. “I’m a man. It’s what men do— they take hits the face and handle it with ease.”
Tune in to ABC tonight at 9 p.m. ET to see if Zendaya will take home the coveted Mirror Ball trophy over Aly Raisman, Kellie Pickler and Jacoby Jones.
