Last night, Grumpy Cat was the big winner at the second annual “Friskies”—which has been called the Oscars for Internet cat videos—and despite being the top
dog cat, the little sensation looked… well, grumpy of course!
Grumpy Cat—whose given name is Tardar Sauce—was presented with Lifetime Achievement Award—even though she’s not even two years old!
Other awards were given to videos in the categories of Cat Comedy, Catventure, Pursuit of Food/Treat and Rescue Cat.
Big stars, such as comedian Michael Ian Black and Angela Kinsey of The Office, came to New York to celebrate these famous felines, include Grumpy—although she doesn’t seem impressed with them, either!
Her grumpy appearance is the result of feline dwarfism and an underbite, and isn’t actually representative of her demeanor. Tardar Sauce’s human, Tabatha Bundensen, assures fans on her website that “She isn’t really grumpy,” and rather “a super cute and cuddly kitty [who] loves to be held and rubbed!”
Tard shot to Internet superstardom after Tabatha’s brother posted a picture of her silly expression on the social news site reddit; from there, she was made into meme that quickly spread around the Internet.
Her fame was quick to translate offline as well; some of Tardar Sauce’s most impressive accomplishments include being featured on the cover of New York Magazine and the front page of The Wall Street Journal; publishing an official book; being named Meme of the Year last year by the Webby Awards and Buzzfeed; and, of course, earning The Friskies Lifetime Achievement Award!
In May, it was announced that Grumpy Cat signed his own movie deal.
