It was a memorable weekend for the concertgoers at Clear Channel’s iHeartRadio Music Festival in Las Vegas, after Green Day’s lead singer, Billie Joe Armstrong, had a very public breakdown and smashed his guitar on stage.
Green Day was one of several bands scheduled to perform at the festival on Friday night, where they played for about 30 minutes before the time came to wrap up their set.
In the middle of their song, “Basket Case,” Billie Joe stopped playing and began ranting in a fit of rage. Peppered with obscenities, his tirade went on for a full minute about how he believed their set was being cut short.
The Green Day frontman then smashed his guitar on stage and stormed off, leaving listeners perplexed and concerned.
Though many chalked up his behavior to typical musical rebellion, and the iHeartRadio site declared Billie Joe’s outburst as “one of the most epic, punk rock sets in recent memory,” there was more to Billie Joe’s behavior than just passion.
Green Day took to their website on Sunday to apologize to those at the festival and to their sponsors at Clear Channel, and to inform fans that Billie Joe will be seeking treatment.
“Billie Joe is seeking treatment for substance abuse,” the announcement read. “We would like everyone to know that our set was not cut short by Clear Channel and to apologize to those we offended at the iHeartRadio Festival in Las Vegas. We regretfully must postpone some of our upcoming promotional appearances.”
