Rue loved Beyoncé, hated Sex and the City

Rue0604.jpg The late Rue McClanahan was even sassier than Blanche Devereaux, the sexy Southern senior she played on The Golden Girls from 1985-1992. In Touch interviewed her back in November 2004 — and the Emmy-winning actress and pioneering animal-rights activist opened up about beating breast cancer, hating Sex and the City and how when it came to marriage, the sixth time was the charm.

Do you think Blanche would be a Botox babe today?
I think she would. She went to have a face-lift and then chickened out, as I recall, on one of the shows. She’d be in for anything that makes her look younger, as long as it’s not too painful.

Blanche was quite the man-eater. If you were to do a Demi and hook up with one of today’s young Hollywood studs, who’d be your Ashton?
I wouldn’t trade my husband in for all the men in Hollywood, darling. I’m married to the most wonderful man in the world, Morrow Wilson. When I found out I had breast cancer, we had only known each other for two-and-a-half weeks. I came out of the doctor’s office and told him, and he said, "I want you to know that I love you, and I want to be with you for the long haul — whatever it takes.” That’s the kind of strength that any woman in that situation needs in her man!

Do you have any advice for creating a happy marriage?
Go to a marriage counselor, understand each other, be very patient and very loving. You’ve got to learn who you’re really with, and he has to learn who he’s really with.

What’s your suggested strategy for someone dealing with breast cancer?
Stay optimistic and expect to get well.

You worked with Beyoncé on The Fighting Temptations. What was your take on her?
So beautiful, so sweet, so talented. What people forget about her is how young she is: She had a birthday party during filming — and it was a roller-skating party!

The Golden Girls seemed to pave the way for another frisky female foursome in Sex and the City. What did you think of that show?
I think it was one of the most dreadfully written shows! I thought it was sleazy. They’re not being discriminating if they say we have anything in common!

WEtv pays tribute to Rue tonight with an eight-hour Golden Girls marathon featuring the best of Blanche. “WE Remember Rue” airs from 5 p.m. through 1 a.m.

Demi Moore: Rock Bottom
It could have been a happy night for Demi Moore — a chance to put the most painful and humiliating period of her life behind her, even if just for a few hours. But while Demi had been nominated for a Directors Guild award for co-directing the Lifetime special Five, she spent the January 28 ceremony in hiding as she coped with the fallout from a drug incident that landed her in the hospital five days earlier. “She’s literally hiding in shame over how far she has fallen,” a pal shares.

Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie On The Rocks?
Could Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinze Jr. be the next in a long list of celebrity couples heading for divorce? Although their rep denies the story, the duo, who have managed to remain largely out of the spotlight throughout their relationship, raised eyebrows recently when Sarah, 34, walked the Golden Globes red carpet solo — and without her enormous diamond engagement ring.

Tabatha Coffey’s Tough Love
“Look, I know it’s like boot camp when I come in,” says Tabatha Takes Over star Tabatha Coffey with a twinkle in her eye and a smile so broad that fans of her hit show might not even recognize her. The Bravo star admits with a giggle that channeling her inner drill sergeant is often the only way to get the job done.

Seal’s Ex: Don’t Take Him Back
The song that Seal chose for his performance on a recent episode of Ellen — Al Green’s “Let’s Stay Together” — seemed specifically designed to make his estranged wife, Heidi Klum, reconsider her decision to end their marriage. While Seal may have good reason to endear himself to Heidi — who has legions of fans and pulled in a whopping $20 million last year — former supermodel Tatjana Patitz, 45, maintains that the singer is a selfish, immature man who is prone to frightening rages. “He is not a nice person,” Tatjana, who dated Seal for nearly a year, tells In Touch.
