Sex and the City 2 Exclusive: “One happy surprise after another”

As any Sex and the City fan knows, the clothes help tell the story, so who better to give the scoop on the new movie than famed costume designer Patricia Field? "I'm very, very happy," Patricia tells In Touch of the finished product. "I give it an A and I don't give As out very often. It was different than any other movie I've seen lately. I could call it 'Sex and the City musical.' It's just one happy surprise after another. It was visually beautiful." A lot of that is thanks to Patricia, who also helped design an exclusive bottle for SKYY Vodka based on Sex and the City style - but there's one part she wants nothing to do with. "I did not do the movie poster - that's why it didn't look like it should," she reveals. "I guess they didn't want to pay my price!"

Do the girls show more of their bodies than they did on the show or less?
I think they pretty well stick to who they were. I never thought of it in terms of, "Let's give them more skin." A lot of it takes place in the Middle East and as an effect of that, I did cover them up a bit more in acknowledgment and respect of the location. For me, that was like a dream come true because my background is Greek and Armenian. When people ask me who my icon is, it's Cleopatra. I was to combine my fashion, like western glamour with my Middle Eastern knowledge through my lifetime. It was made in heaven for me.

Does Carrie have a bigger clothes budget than the other girls?
I have an overall budget and I spend it the way I see it. There isn't a Carrie budget or a Charlotte budget or anything like that.

What big fashion trend will take off after people see Sex and the City 2?
Halston is one of the big trends of the movie. It wasn't my intention. I've been feeling for some chic simplicity, even before the movie.

Do the stars ever tell you there's nothing they would wear or a specific color that's off-limits?
I'm sure there's a color that you don't like and doesn't look good on you. That's normal. The process is not of me saying, "Wear this" and them saying "No."

Kristin Davis said SATC made her flaunt her body - did you notice that?
It's not more about skin, it's more about form. I read that comment somewhere and it made me very happy because I was always a proponent with Kristin. She has an hourglass figure. I wanted to not hide that figure but show that figure. I was like, "You have a booty - let's show it!" I have the positive sides of her body which somehow she always interpreted as negative. I think over the course of 10 years, I was able to open up her eyes to it. I'm happy for her because now she can enjoy it. It's for her.

How many shoes did you use for the movie?
We had a room full of shoes. I've never counted them. It's not as big as Saks' shoe department, but it's big.

Would you say Carrie is more daring with her style now?
I wouldn't call her more daring, I would just call her more original. No, I think it's Carrie. I don't find that it's jumped in any direction other than what's the established Carrie. Miranda really looks great and really happy. She looks fabulous. I love her look. Carrie carries it. You could put a plastic bag on Carrie and she can work it.

Sarah Jessica Parker has said she's more daring in real life, fashion-wise. Do you agree?
I think maybe based on what she's saying, she enjoys the supermodel role that she's playing. She loves fashion. She kind of became a supermodel by the back door.

What was it like working with Miley Cyrus and Penelope Cruz, who have cameos in the movie?
My experience with Miley Cyrus was really great. She reminds me a lot of me at her age. She's so young and a total pro because she didn't just start yesterday even though she's still a kid. Her disposition is positive and happy. She's intelligent and communicative. I loved working with her and meeting her. And Penelope, you can tell she's so smart. She's calm, she knows herself, she's smooth, it was great.

Is it true that Victoria Beckham also makes a cameo? She's not in the movie, I can tell you that. I wish she was.


The girls have said that they've had their feelings hurt and busy lives lately. Any chances of a third movie?
There's always a chance. I don't know, I think that's something you need to ask Michael Patrick King. I haven't heard anything official but it doesn't mean that a third can't happen. Why not? People love Sex and the City!
