Idol: “The opportunity brought me to tears”

AmericanIdol0401.jpg Wednesday’s American Idol results show may have been a great night for guest performers Usher (with Will.i.am), Ruben Studdard and Sean "Diddy" Combs and Dirty Money, but not for Idol hopeful Didi Benami. After receiving the lowest number of votes, Didi nailed her version of Fleetwood Mac’s “Rhiannon,” but judge Simon Cowell delivered the bad news that she would not be saved.

“I had a great time on the show,” said Didi after the decision was made. “Everything happens for a reason. I’m exhausted and can’t wait to sleep!” After her rest, Didi is looking forward to hitting the road with her fellow Idols for the Idol Summer Tour that will take her all over the country. “I’m excited about that,” the 23-year-old from Knoxville, Tenn. beamed.

Next week the remaining Idols tackle songs from The Beatles songbook and R&B superstar Rihanna hits the stage on Wednesday to perform her hit “Te Amo.”

You moved to LA to make it a few years ago. How has the experience been?
I moved here when I was 19, and have crazy roommates and all kinds of ridiculous experiences. I moved a lot and there were points I didn’t have a place to live and was living out of my car. It’s been rough, but I managed to find my way. I waited tables, it’s never been a stable environment. It’s crazy and you get kicked down a lot. I taught myself guitar and worked hard to get where I am.

You seemed very emotional throughout the show, and cried a lot. Is that how you usually are?
Music is therapeutic for me and is who I am. The cameras always caught me when I was emotional and I am not always emotional. But when I broke down there was a camera in my face! This is something I’ve always wanted to do and reaching the place I did on the show was emotional for me. It was an amazing opportunity for me and bought me to tears.

You had a “moment” on stage with Siobhan and Crystal. What did they say to you afterwards?
Lots of things! We three were so close and Crystal came and stayed with me last night, which was nice. They are amazing, wonderful people and I really enjoyed getting to know them both. It’s hard meeting other artists you connect with and want to work with and you are competing. We are all different and unique, yet love each other along the way. I am happy they are moving forward and wish them the best.

What kind of music can we hope to hear from you in the future?
“Didi Music!” Singer/songwriter-type acoustic, low-key, chill music. I am going to put my heart into it like I do every time. Maybe a little jazz and a lot of everything I have experienced in life.
