Survivor's Tyson: "I should have stuck with the sure thing"

Survivor0326.jpg This week's Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains featured a double elimination — and on the Villains team, that meant a showdown between Russell, who found the hidden immunity idol, and Boston Rob, who won individual immunity. Game mastermind Rob concocted a foolproof plan to keep his alliance intact by forcing a re-vote and eliminating either Russell or Parvati, but Tyson wrote down Parvati's name instead. When Russell did exactly what Rob predicted by handing over immunity to Parvati, Tyson's fate was sealed, in what will go down as one of the most inexplicable decisions ever made on the show. "I heeded no one’s advice except for my own, and it ended up getting me into trouble, which is perhaps the first time in history that that has happened," the 30-year-old from Lindon, Utah, jokes to In Touch.

Eliminated March 24: Tyson Apostol

How was this time playing the game different from last?
This time was less pleasure, more business.

Do you think you took care of business?
I was taking care of business. If me switching my vote would have worked and Parvati would have gone home, I would have looked like a genius and I would have taken the proper risk at the proper time. In hindsight, I probably should have just stuck with the sure thing.

Was it a last-minute decision?
Completely last-minute. Seconds. I was thinking, “I should stick to the plan so my alliance isn’t pissed, but I really want Parvati home before Russell because I think I can use Russell.”

You managed to shake up Boston Rob a little, so that’s something.
Yeah, but he’s still got five guys there who voted with him, so it’s not all bad.

What was the worst thing about the living conditions this time?
Brazil is hotter and drier, but when the rain came in either location, it came hard. Samoa was good because there wasn’t anything harmful on land. There was stuff in the water, but on land, you could go to sleep knowing that you weren’t going to get bitten by a snake. In Brazil, there were poisonous snakes around. I did appreciate having the ocean around, but it was so full of coral that even touching it, you would get cut.

What did you think of your teammates? Clearly, you're not a fan of Parvati's.
I don’t dislike Parvati as a person. I just thought her gameplay was so stupid, she needed to go home. She was not talking to anybody but Danielle and Russell. She and Danielle would sit around at camp eating bananas all day — they had no banana etiquette! I thought, “She doesn’t deserve to be here. She’s not playing the game.”

In retrospect, do you regret telling Coach not to wear the feather to Tribal Council?
Did he not wear it? I don’t know, I think all of my advice went in one ear and out the other. Because I remember I told him, and the next day he was doing tai chi on the beach.

You also kissed J.T. during one challenge, which they only showed very briefly.
They didn’t highlight it. It was very subtle. I think he was a little surprised. I think it’s funny to kiss dudes like that. I didn’t even remember kissing J.T.

Was he the only one you kissed?
I don’t know! I don’t remember kissing him, so for all I know I could have kissed everybody twice.

Did you think if you merged, that you might be able to align with him, since you had been on the same season together?
I kind of figured that if I had to, I could probably use him for a couple of votes. I wasn’t going to help him in any way, shape or form, because of the previous season. Mostly I just wanted him to be gone before me, and that didn’t work out.

Who are you rooting for then?
Myself! I feel like I was most deserving of a million dollars. If it’s not me, I don’t really care that much. Rob’s a cool guy. I really like Rob and I would love to see him get far. I know that he’s out there to win, and he’s playing really hard. I bear no ill will toward anyone.

Would you do it again?
It depends on where I’m at in life and if I could take the time to do it, but if they wanted me to come back and be awesome on the show again, I would enjoy it. It’s not as hard as everybody says. It’s not “surviving,” it’s “tolerating” for 39 days, but “Toleration” is not a good title for a show.
