American Idol: A new Paige in her career

AmericanIdol0325.jpg With a place on the American Idol summer tour hanging in the balance, Paige Miles found herself in the bottom two last night, alongside fellow contestant Tim Urban. After a lackluster performance of Phil Collins’ “Against All Odds” on Tuesday’s performance show, the bad news was delivered that Paige had been eliminated. It got worse when the judges announced they would not be exercising their option to save her — even before she even had the chance to sing and convince them she was worth it. “That hurt,” Paige tells In Touch. “I was pretty bummed.” Despite struggling with laryngitis and swollen vocal chords for the last three weeks, the 24-year-old Floridian did manage to redeem herself with a roaring rendition of Free’s “All Right Now, “ leaving the competition on a high note. Next week, the top 10 will tackle R&B soul classics with the help of mentor Usher.

American Idol
Eliminated March 24: Paige Miles

“Against All Odds” has been the downfall of a lot of contestants. Did you know it had been done so many times before?
I hadn’t realized how many times it had been done. I was in rehearsals last week and was just trying to find a slower song that wouldn’t stress me vocally too much. My vocal chords were pretty much trashed and wanted to take care of them. It was a decision for my health.

What was your favorite part about being on Idol?
Just being able to perform on a stage and singing. It’s what I love to do. I would have done it in jeans and a T-shirt. I love to sing.

A lot of people thought Miley Cyrus was too young to be a mentor, but how was she?
I felt Miley did a great job, she has tons of experience in the business as far as touring and making albums and doing things that a lot of us are trying to do in the competition. So in that aspect, it was really good. And talking to her, her age did not come across at all. I just spoke to her as someone with experience doing what I would like to do — she was great.

Did you feel it was unfair that the judges told you the save would not be used before you sang?
Yes, it hurt. I initially thought the save was something that even if they were not going to use it, you get the opportunity to at least sing for it and then make a decision. But for the statement to be made before opening my mouth… I was pretty bummed.

What’s next for you?
I’d like to continue doing music and follow my dreams. Idol is a huge platform and learning experience, so I just want to keep moving forward with things. I love to perform, and this is something I definitely want to make a career out of, and possibly move to Los Angeles.
