How stars get red-carpet ready
Although it may seem like celebrities just roll out of bed looking perfectly glamorous, there’s a lot of prep that goes into getting red-carpet gorgeous! This Sunday, your favorite stars will converge in Hollywood to kick off awards show season at the Golden Globes — but, truth be told, they’ve been getting ready for the big night for weeks! Click here to learn about some of the stars’ top beautifying musts before showtime.
1. Get in shapeUnsightly bulges can distract from a gorgeous, skin-skimming gown — which is why stars stay strict with their diets and workouts during the weeks leading up to an awards show.
Brian Abercrombie and Kristin Anderson, fitness experts, celebrity trainers and Founders of M-Train (a mobile fitness app), explain to In Touch that losing a couple of pounds makes you walk taller and with more confidence, which automatically makes you look better. “If a star client only has two weeks to get in shape for an event, we’ll get them into the gym for two-hour cardio sessions,” they say, adding, “It’s a quick way to fight fat!”
(For those who never made it to the gym, thank goodness for Spanx! Everyone from Jessica Alba to Oprah swears by the infamous tummy-tuckers!)
2. BotoxAlthough they will never tell (except for Ugly Betty’s Vanessa Williams, who admits to biannual injections), let’s face it — stars get Botox. According to Dr. David Bank, a dermatologist in Mt. Kisco, N.Y., injections like Botox or Dysport help relax facial muscles, offering a wrinkle-free appearance that keeps celebrities looking cool, calm and collected throughout the evening. “These injectables not only help reduce and calm fine lines and wrinkles, but they also help reduce oil production so the skin looks flawless and not greasy on-camera,” explains Dr. Bank to In Touch. “Botox can also be helpful for celebrities who have acne-prone skin because it helps reduce potential breakouts.”
Botox or Dysport injections can set celebrities back $400 to $1,000, depending on how much they get done. But after a little pinch here and there, your favorite stars emerge from their doctor’s visit ready for their close-ups!
Hot new product alert: Needles not your thing? Anastasia Line Erasing Serum ($45, Sephora stores and sephora.com) miraculously smooths even the most stubborn lines.
3. Get to the root!To look truly put-together, stars start from head to toe. How is it that Charlize Theron never has a grown-out root in sight? Because she keeps her color in check — especially right before a big event like the Golden Globes! Rick Wellman, lead colorist at Patrick Melville Salon, tells In Touch, “It is extremely important to walk the red carpet with root-free color, as hair generally appears a shade darker on camera.” He adds that it’s best to finish with a glaze for “superior shine and that reflective quality to bounce off the camera’s flash.”
4. Whiten upThe last thing any celebrity wants is to smile for the camera and show off a mouthful of not-so-pearly-whites. Instead, a gleaming smile is imperative to the star’s overall presentation and appearance on the red carpet. Dr. Thomas Connelly, a cosmetic dentist in NYC (drconnelly.com) agrees, telling In Touch, “The most obvious body language is your smile because your teeth are front and center, so if your teeth aren’t perfect and white, it becomes a negative focal point.” While drugstore products, like Crest Whitestrips, are an inexpensive way to get the job done, the Zoom! teeth whitening procedure (typically costing $500) can turn your teeth up to eight shades whiter in under an hour! “Your teeth can realistically become as white as you want them to,” attests Dr. Connelly.
5. Groom your browsBrow guru to the stars, Anastasia Soare, who will be grooming Penelope Cruz’s brows, among others, for the Globes, says eyebrows are essential to a finished look because they frame and lift your eyes and are an essential finisher for a well-kept look. “Great makeup with bad brows is like a having a perfect blowout with visible roots,” equates Anastasia.
Now you can use the same wax Anastasia uses on all her A-list clientele! This convenient Anastasia Mini Wax Kit is exactly what the eyebrow guru takes with her while traveling with celebrities. ($12, Sephora stores and sephora.com)
6. Lasy envyDramatic lashes are made to standout on the red carpet — no wonder stars like Jennifer Lopez and Kim Kardashian can’t live without their eyelash extensions! “The next big thing in beauty services is not only about looking red-carpet ready, it’s about keeping that ultra-glamorous look going everyday,” explains Michelle Larner, leading lash technician at Uptown Girl in NYC. “Eyelash extensions are the perfect example because they allow eyes to POP on camera, but the best part is you don’t have to take them off and keep reapplying every day!”
7. Get your tan onFor just $60, Fake Bake gives stars a custom air-brushed glow, making it look like they stepped off the beach at St. Barts and onto the Golden Globes red carpet. After all, everyone looks better with a tan, right?!
